ABOUT THE HUSKIES
After losing 99 percent of their scoring from a season ago, the St. Cloud State Huskies are looking for their first win of the season. A rebuilding year, SCSU finished third in the WCHA last year to become the first team outside of Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and Wisconsin to crack the top three. Sitting at 0-26-1 overall and 0-21-1 in the WCHA, SCSU lost a heartbreaker to Ohio State last weekend. After losing 6-1 on Friday, OSU’s Ally Tarr scored the 3-2 game-winning goal at 19:09 in the third period to hand SCSU it’s 26th loss of the season. The Huskies’ only points in the WCHA, however, came against a top-10 team in Minnesota Duluth (12/3) in a 2-2 tie and a shootout win.
THE SERIES
In the all-time series, Minnesota holds a 43-3-2 record against the Huskies, dating back to Jan. 9, 1999. All three of the losses came at the National Hockey Center as well as one of the ties. The Gophers tied SCSU, 2-2 last year (2/12/10) as Katie Frischmann scored the game-tying goal at 5:02 in the third. SCSU ended up winning the shootout.
THE LAST TIME
The Golden Gophers earned a series sweep over SCSU the last time out with 5-0 and 3-0 wins. Anne Schleper made the most of the weekend, scoring six points and was later named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry each had four points, while Noora Räty had back-to-back shutouts.
GET SHORTY
Minnesota has scored three short-handed goals this season, including two in the last two series. Amanda Kessel scored a short-handed goal against Ohio State, which later proved to be the gamewinner. Becky Kortum also scored a short-handed goal in the Gophers’ 3-1 loss to Wisconsin. The Gophers, however, are far from reaching the record, set at 19 in 2004-05.
