Gophers Host Girls and Women Youth Clinic

More than 25 student-athletes volunteered to be group guides and station leaders for 80 girls, who ranged from 8 to 12 years of age. Groups of participants were led around to six different activity stations by their student-athlete guides. Each station – softball, soccer, volleyball, bowling, relays, and basketball – was facilitated by volunteer Gopher student-athletes as well. Learning basic skills and playing mini-games, each small group of girls and their leaders spent 11 minutes at a station, and then rotated around the gym to allow each group of girls to give everything a go.
The goal of the clinic was for the girls to interact with student-athletes, who “get to show how cool it is to be a part of a team be role models to the girls who are attending”, said organizer Katie Meyer.
The Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day coincide with the National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which was February 2. This is the fourth year that the University of Minnesota and the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport has organized events and clinics to provide opportunities for young girls to meet and interact with Gopher student-athletes and learn more about how to become involved in sports and to live a healthy lifestyle.
