Weitz, James Double Champs for Gophers

Elizabeth Weitz and Danielle James each won two individual events to highlight the second day of the Minnesota Challenge for the Golden Gopher women’s swimming & diving team. Overall, Minnesota won 13 events on Saturday at the University Aquatic Center.

Weitz, a sophomore, started her day by winning the 400 individual medley with a season-best time of 4 minutes, 23.50 seconds. She would later capture the 200 backstroke event in the evening session with a time of 2:03.85.

James, a freshman, won both the breaststroke events taking the 100-yard breaststroke title in the afternoon session with a time of 1:03.56. She followed with the victory in the 200 breast in the evening session with a time of 2:20.67. She also teamed with Melissa Nelson, Natalie Herrild and Abbey Staats to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1;43.97.

All those relay members would continue their winning ways in other events during the day. Nelson captured the title in the 100 back in a time of 57.59 seconds, while Herrild won the 100 fly in a time of 56.90 seconds. Staats gathered her first-place finish in the 100 free with a clocking of 51.37 seconds. Herrild, Staats and Nelson would team with Monica Radecke to win the 400 free relay in a time of 3:27.71.

Other champions in the pool were Lauren Weis in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.55 and Kelsey Ridder in the 200 fly in 2:04.61.

The Gophers swept the diving events with freshmen winning both titles. Sarah McCrady won the 1-meter diving with a score of 309.95 points. Maggie Keefer took first in the 3-meter event with a score of 292.80 points.

Minnesota now turns its attention to the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 16-19 in Bloomington, Ind.
