The Minnesota volleyball team has named Alfee Reft as an assistant coach according to an announcement on Monday, Feb. 28.

Reft was one of the two liberos on the USA Men's National Team roster. He was on the roster for the FIVB World Championship and the FIVB World League in 2010. He was also part of the Silver Medal team at the NORCECA Continental Championships in 2009 and also part the FIVB World League roster that year.

In 2008, Reft was an alternate for the US Men's Olympic Team that won the Gold Medal in Beijing. He was also the designated libero for the U.S. National Team when they won the Gold Medal at the Pan-American Cup in 2008. Reft also played in every match at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand where the USA National Team claimed a Bronze Medal.

He was an assistant coach for the 18-1s and head coach for the 13-2s Laguna Beach Volleyball Club teams in 2009 and 2010. Reft was also a coach with the TCA Club Volleyball program from 2006 to 2009.

"Alfee was a great volleyball player, but he's a better volleyball coach," said Minnesota Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon. "I could not be happier with his decision to join the Gopher Volleyball coaching staff. The knowledge and experience he brings will be invaluable."

Reft played for the University of Hawai'i from 2004-06. In 2005, he was named an AVCA First-Team All-American and was also tabbed the Asics/Volleyball Magazine Defensive Player of the Year. That year, he collected 272 digs, and set a new Hawai'i single-season record with 2.67 dps. He was also an AVCA Second-Team All-American in 2006. Reft transferred to Hawai'i in 2004 from UC Santa Barbara and became the starting libero for the Warriors. That year, he sent the school-record for digs in the rally-scoring era for Hawai'i with 238.

In 2006, Reft graduated the University of Hawai'i with a BA in English.
