Missouri Trips Up Minnesota

The Minnesota women's tennis team began its Spring Break trip of four matches in seven days with a 4-3 loss at Missouri on Friday night. The Gophers now head to North Carolina Wilmington for a March 14 contest and then play on March 15 at William & Mary. They conclude their week on the road on March 17 at North Carolina.
The Gophers won the doubles point against Missouri with wins at the second and third positions, but dropped four of six singles matches. In doubles, Peta Forsyth and Magdalena Wiecha were victorious 8-4 against Rachel Stuhlmann and Maria Christensen at No. 2 doubles. Mariana Spilca and Alexa Palen won 8-6 at third doubles against Jamie Mera and Marlen Hacke. The Gophers lone doubles loss came at No. 1 doubles when Alessandra Ferrazzi and Doron Muravnik fell 8-4 to Kaitlyn Ritchie and Mallory Weber.
Ferrazzi avenged her doubles loss to Ritchie in singles with a three-set win at the first position. The Minnesota senior triumphed 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to earn her first win in her first try at No. 1 singles this year. Muravnik was the only other Gopher to post a singles win, as she defeated Mera 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. After beginning the year with five straight losses, Muravnik has now won two of her last three matches.
Yuliana Umanets returned to the Gopher lineup after missing the last to dual matches with an injury and lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to Weber. Wiecha was defeated at the third position by Hacke 6-0, 6-3. Palen, who has played singles matches at the second, third, fourth and fifth position this year, lost 6-4, 6-3 to Christensen at No. 4 singles. Forsyth competed at No. 6 singles, but fell to Stuhlmann 6-3, 6-2.
