Minnesota Heads to Cal Poly for Weekend Series

Minnesota finishes a stretch of 17 straight games away from this week with a three-game series at Cal Poly. The Gophers will face the Mustangs on Friday, Mar. 25 at 8 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 26 at 6 p.m. (CT) and Sunday,  Mar. 27 at 12 p.m. (CT). All three games can be heard live on the Gold Zone.

The Gophers are coming off a California trip where it went 3-2. Minnesota defeated Gonzaga 8-1 on Mar. 11, lost the next two games to the Bulldogs 10-3 and 15-6 and bounced back to defeated Sacramento State 3-1 and 7-5 in 11 innings. The

Gophers were supposed to face Santa Clara in a three-game series, but all three games were rained out. Cal Poly enters the week with a 7-10 overall record. 

Minnesota is led by AJ Pettersen who is batting .350 with nine runs, four doubles and four RBI. Pettersen is the only Gopher to collect a hit in each game this year. Justin Gominsky also enters with a 10-game hitting streak and is batting .333 with 10 runs, four RBI and five stolen bases. Kyle Geason and Matt Puhl have also knocked in eight runs for the Gophers this year.

Sophomore TJ Oakes will start for the Gophers on Friday. His last start came on Mar. 11. Oakes, who will go up against Cal Poly's Steven Fischback, is 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 21.0 innings. Minnesota will start senior Phil Isaksson on Saturday. Isaksson, who will be opposed by Cal Poly's Mason Radeke, is 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA with 12 strikeouts in a team-high 21.2 innings. Austin Lubinsky will start for the Gophers on Sunday. He will face Cal Poly's Chase Johnson on Sunday. Lubinsky is 1-3 with a 7.79 ERA and has 14 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.

Senior closer Scott Matyas has not given up a run or a hit in 9.1 innings this season. He has walked four batters and collected 13 strikeouts in 9.1 innings. Matyas has four saves and a win this season.

Cal Poly enters the week with a 7-10 overall record. Earlier in the week, the Mustangs split a doubleheader with No. 15 UCLA (W, 2-1; L, 0-8). Cal Poly also lost at Pepperdine 5-3 on Mar. 22. The Mustangs’ three-game series against UCLA over the weekend ended up being reduced to a doubleheader due to weather. Cal Poly is led by Mike Miller who is batting .457 with 10 runs and nine RBI. Bobby Crocker also is batting .323 with 12 runs and eight RBI. DJ Gentile has a team-best 12 RBI and is batting .286 with seven runs. Evan Busby has a team-high 13 runs on the season.

The Mustangs are led by Mason Radeke who is 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA and has 37 strikeouts in 32.1 innings. Kyle Anderson is also 1-4 with a 5.66 ERA, while Steven Fischback is 1-1 with a 6.05 ERA. Jeff Johnson is 1-0 with two saves, a 0.93 ERA and has 16 strikeouts in 9.2 innings. This will be the first meeting in baseball between Minnesota and Cal Poly.
