Gophers Helping the Homeless

Each day in Minnesota over 9,000 people are homeless and about 2,000 of them are not fortunate enough to have received a shelter from a variety of homeless shelters around the state. On March 8th, five Gopher student-athletes set out to help the homeless.

Kelly Wilson and Anna Johnson (Women's Track and field), Michael Torchia (Men's Track and field) Alyssa Grogan (Women's Hockey) and Yuri Nagai (Women's Gymnastics) traveled to Fridley Middle School to work with a special education class that is tackling the issue of homelessness. The class did research and found out that there is a big need for blankets in homeless shelters today. So the Gophers alongside the help of some Augsburg students and staff helped the Fridley Middle School class make tie blankets for the homeless.

The middle school students created stations that split up tasks for making the blankets. These stations allowed for blankets to be made quickly. The student-athletes divided up and helped cut and tie the blankets while learning more about homelessness from the students. In an hour and a half the student-athletes and the middle school students made around ten blankets that are going to be directly donated to a homeless shelter.
