Gophers Earn 73 Spots on Winter Academic Teams

Minnesota’s 2010-11 winter sports teams had 73 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition, conference officials announced on Wednesday, Mar. 30.

In order to qualify for Academic All-Big Ten honors, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

Minnesota's winter sports include men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and wrestling.

Senior Blake Hoffarber, who was named a Second-Team Academic All-American and was Honorable Mention All-Big Ten, received the honors for the men’s basketball program. Hoffarber finished his career 18th on the Gophers’ all-time scoring list, and ended his career as the school’s all-time leader in three-point makes and attempts.

Junior Kiara Buford, who was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten, was one of seven Golden Gopher women’s basketball student-athletes to receive the honors. Buford led the team in scoring, and finished the season averaging 14.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.3 spg. 

The Minnesota men’s gymnastics team, who competes in the Big Ten Championship on Apr. 1-2, placed seven members on the Big Ten All-Academic team. Junior DJ Repp, who is ranked first in the Big Ten in vault, was one of those seven honorees for the Gophers.

Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team also had seven members named to the Big Ten All-Academic team. Second-Team All-Big Ten honorees Kendra Elm and Kristin Furukawa were two of the seven women’s gymnastics student-athletes honored.

The Golden Gopher men’s swimming and diving team, which is coming off a 15th place in the NCAA Championships, had 17 student-athletes named Academic All-Big Ten. Five of the Gopher swimmers (Kevin Baseheart, Zach Bolin, Curt Carlson, Ivan Gutesa and Nadav Kochavi) who were named All-Americans received the honors.

Minnesota’s women’s swimming team, who finished ninth place at the NCAA Championships, had 22 student-athletes named Academic All-Big Ten. The Gophers’ three individual national champions, Kelci Bryant, Haley Spencer and Jillian Tyler, were named Academic All-Big Ten.

The Golden Gophers wrestling team, which finished seven in the NCAA Championships, had 12 individual named Academic All-Big Ten. All-American’s Zach Sanders, Kevin Steinhaus and Mike Thorn were among the 12 honorees for Minnesota. Thorn finished third in the nation in the 141-pound weight class, while Sanders (125 pounds) and Steinhaus (184 pounds) finished fifth and eighth respectively in the NCAA Championships.

In total, the Big Ten recognized 37 men's and 55 women's basketball players, 42 men's and 46 women's gymnasts, 100 men's and 181 women's swimming and diving athletes and 63 wrestlers.
