Gophers Fall Short Against Indiana

The Minnesota women’s tennis team could not bounce back from a 7-0 Saturday setback against No. 66 Purdue on Sunday, falling to Indiana 6-1 at the IU Tennis Complex in Bloomington, Ind. Regular top-flight singles player, No. 56 Natallia Pintusava was out of the lineup.
IU, which won its first Big Ten match of the season with a 4-3 victory against Wisconsin on Saturday, got off to a quick start in doubles. The Hoosiers limited UM to a combined five games won in the three doubles contests to gain a doubles sweep an a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Singles play was almost equally tough for the Gophers.
Charlotte Martin, Evgeniya Vertesheva, Leslie Hureau locked up the overall win for Indiana with straight-set wins at the No. 4, 2, and 1 positions, respectively. Minnesota’s Magdalena Wiecha disrupted IU’s sweep attempt by earning a win at No. 3 over Katya Zapadalova, who retired while trailing 2-1 in the second set after dropping the first set 7-5.
Myriam Sopel added to Indiana’s score with a win over Peta Forsyth at No. 6 and Kayla Fujimoto capped the match with a match tiebreak triumph over Mariana Spilca at No. 5. Spilca won the first set 6-4, but lost the second set 6-3 and dropped the match tiebreaker 10-1.
The Gophers will continue Big Ten play next weekend with road matches at Penn State and Ohio State before returning home to finish the regular season against Illinois and Iowa.
