Sara Moulton threw her 12th shutout of the season and Sara DuPaul doubled in the game's only run in the third inning as Minnesota topped Penn State 1-0 on Saturday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

The low-scoring affair remained scoreless until the third inning when Minnesota (25-17 overall, 3-4 Big Ten) capitalized on a pair of lead-off base runners to score the sole run of the afternoon. Malisa Barnes opened the inning with a walk, and Dannie Skrove was hit by a pitch before Alex Davis reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second for DuPaul. The freshman designated player laced a single to left center that plated Skrove from second  for the eventual game-winning run. DuPaul would pace Minnesota with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

On the mound, Moulton kept the Nittany Lions at bay through all seven innings, striking out seven to improve her record to 22-10 this season. Penn State would challenge the freshman pitcher, putting runners on the base path in each of the game's seven innings, but Moulton and the Gophers defense kept the Nittany Lions from finding the equalizer. Penn State (22-7, 4-5) would strand eight runners in the game compared to five for Minnesota.

Jackie Hill took the loss for Penn State, throwing six innings, walking three and striking out five while allowing one run.

Minnesota continues the 2011 season with a series finale against Penn State tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
