University of Minnesota women’s hockey head coach Brad Frost announced that Shyler Sletta (Elko New Market, Minn.) has been accepted to the University and will join the Golden Gopher program in the fall of 2011.

“We are very excited that Shyler has chosen to become a Golden Gopher,” head coach Brad Frost said.  “She is a wonderful person and student. Shyler will give us some great depth at the goaltending position.”

A 5-foot, 5-inch goalie, Sletta was a three-time all-conference honoree in 2009, 2010 and 2011 with New Prague High School. An all-state honorable selection in 2011, she was also a top 10 goalie for the Let’s Play Hockey Senior Goalie award. With the Trojans, Sletta held a career .927 save percentage and a goals against average of 2.23. She had the highest save percentage in the Missota Conference two straight seasons as well as the lowest GAA in 2010 and second-lowest in 2011. Sletta also had the highest number of saves (687 in 744 shots on goal) and played more minutes than any other goalie in the league. A four-year letterwinner in hockey and a two-year letterwinner in soccer, Sletta was also a team captain in both sports as a senior. Having an injury during the soccer season, she still received all-conference honorable mention honors. The daughter of Mark and Kelli Sletta, Shyler will graduate from New Prague this spring and is interested in pursuing a degree in sports management.

“As I earn my degree I want to further develop as a goalie and a teammate, and do so at the highest level possible,” Sletta said. “I’m excited to be part of the Gopher program with top goalies to model and learn from and top skaters and shooters as well. When I was younger I always dreamt of being a Gopher. Now I get to be a player for the home team that I grew up watching and cheering for.”

Sletta is the fifth Minnesotan to join the Gopher women’s hockey roster next season. Stephanie Anderson (North St. Paul), Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids), Meghan Lorence (Mounds View) and Rachel Ramsey (Chanhassen) signed National Letters of Intent this past Novemeber.
