Devin Ste. Marie, of Whitby, Ontario, has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim for the University of Minnesota. Ste. Marie will join the Golden Gopher women’s swimming and diving team next fall.

A highly decorated swimmer, Ste. Marie competes for the Ajax Aquatic Club under the direction of Coach Matt Bell. She comes to the Gopher program with national and international experience. Ste. Marie has captured several national and provincial titles in her age group as a junior swimmer in recent years. In her most recent competition, the 2011 Eastern Canadian Championships, Ste. Marie was a finalist in several events including the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter freestyle races where she posted fifth-place finishes.

“Devin fit in perfectly with our team during her visit to Minnesota last fall,” said Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer. “She is a great butterfly and freestyle specialist who will help us fill the void left by a large graduating class of flyers and freestylers. She is excited to be a Golden Gopher.”

A member of several Canadian National Youth and Junior teams, Ste. Marie already swam to a “B” final at the Senior National level. At the age of 14, Ste. Marie participated in the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials. She currently holds a number of 2012 Canadian Olympic Trials standards.

Ste. Marie owns career-best times of 54.60 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, 2:17.45 in the 200y fly and 1:49.76 in the 200y freestyle. She is the daughter of Darcy and Colleen Ste. Marie.

Minnesota enjoyed its best finish in school history at the NCAA Championships earlier this spring, placing ninth, with three Gophers (Kelci Bryant, Haley Spencer and Jillian Tyler) winning national titles.
