Drake Relays Once Again Draws Big Numbers
The Drake Relays carries the slogan, “America’s Athletic Classic” and in celebrating its 102nd season, the Drake Relays will welcome over 7,000 athletes to the famous blue track of Drake Stadium. A total of 128 NCAA schools  (all divisions) are expected to compete in the men’s event. In addition, athletes from more than 60 countries are expected to compete in the 2011 Drake Relays.

Minnesota History at the Drake Relays
Minnesota has competed in most of the 101 previous Drake Relays and has 49 titles to show for its effort. The Gophers’ first Drake Relays title came in the 2-mile relay in 1912. Last year, Minnesota added one title to the tally, Oladipo Fagbemi in the triple jump.
A fun fact is that Steve Plasencia, Minnesota’s head coach was a Drake Relays titlist, winning the 5,000-meter run in 1978.

Fagbemi Looks to Defend His Drake Relays Crown
Sophomore Oladipo Fagbemi is the defending Drake Relays champion in the triple jump. Fagbemi won the event a year ago with a leap of 49-11 1/4.

Lots of Relays, Lots of Variety

One of the interesting aspects of the Drake Relays schedule is the variety of relay events from the normal 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay to the once a year versions of the sprint medley or the outdoor distance medley relay.
The sprint medley relay features a pair of 200-meter legs, followed by 400-meter and 800-meter legs. The distance medley relay, a common event on the indoor schedule, runs the same distances outdoor: a 1,200-meter leg followed by 400 meters, 800 meters and a 1,600-meter leg to finish up.
