Ben Peterson Wins Pole Vault to Lead Gophers

Senior Ben Peterson captured the title in the pole vault to lead the Golden Gopher men’s track & field team at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz. Peterson cleared a height of 17 feet, 3 inches to win the event.
The meet was scored with Ohio State scoring 161 points to edge Minnesota’s tally of 157. Arizona was third with 156, followed by Washington State with 151.
Derek Storkel, Oladipo Fagbemi and the Gophers’ 4x100-meter relay picked up runner-up finishes. Storkel was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 21.62. Fagbemi finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 49-5 1/2. The relay of Ryan Todhunter, Sean King, Cameron Boy and Fagbemi clocked a runner-up time of 41.43 seconds.
Several Gophers took home third-place finishes. On the track, Kevin Bradley was third in the 400 meters in a time of 47.50 seconds. Minnesota’s 4x400-meter relay of Bradley, John Holton, Fagbemi and Jacob Capek finished third in 3:11.49.
The Gophers also had four third-place finishes in the field events: Matt Clauer in the high jump (6-8 3/4), Aaron Studt in the shot put (57-4 3/4), Jack Szmanda in the pole vault (16-2) and Addison Demer in the triple jump (49-1). Demer added a career-best leap of 24-2 1/2 to finish fifth in the long jump.
King and Todhunter notched performances landing them the No. 8 spots on the Gophers’ top-10 list in their respective events. King was fourth in the 100 meters with a career-best time of 10.47 seconds, while Todhunter was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 14.33 seconds.
