Uhl Rakes in Weekly Honors

University of Minnesota freshman women's soccer player Taylor Uhl has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week as well as being tagged the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. The forward from Eden Prairie, Minn. splashed onto the scene in Sunday's 5-0 home opener win against South Dakota State by recording a hat trick and an assist in only 42 minutes of playing time.
Uhl is one of only two freshmen to be honored by TopDrawerSoccer.com as a Team of the Week member (Chioma Ubogagu, Stanford). She is joined by Vanessa DiBernardo from Illinois as the only other Big Ten player to receive the accolade.
In the match against the Jackrabbits, Uhl notched the team's first goal of the match in the 7th minute by chipping a shot over the SDSU goalkeeper's head. She tallied her second goal in the 52nd minute, when she collected a cross from fellow freshman Taylor Wodnick and one timed it by the keeper. Uhl completed the hat trick 11 minutes later with a slow roller that snuck just inside the right post after the Jacks' keeper deflected the ball.
The Golden Gophers' 2011 points leader also recorded an assist in the 48th minute when she set up senior Josie Solie for the team's third goal of the match.
Sunday's hat trick by Uhl marks only the 11th time in the Golden Gophers' 19-year history a player has accomplished the feat. Uhl is also only the third freshman in Minnesota history to score three goals in one match (Jennifer Walek, 1993 and Erin Hussey, 1993).
The Big Ten also honored DiBernardo as the Offensive Player of the Week and Emily Moran from Iowa as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Uhl and the Gophers head off to California this week and return to the pitch Friday versus San Diego State at 6 p.m. (CST). The team will then turns around and face UC-Santa Barbara on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (CST).
