After the Texas matches last weekend, the University of Minnesota volleyball program moved up five spots in the AVCA Top 25 poll and are ranked sixth in the nation, announced Sept 5 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. With the No. 6 ranking, the Gophers have now been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 51 straight weeks dating back to the final poll in 2007. That extends Minnesota's record-breaking streak of consecutive weeks in the top 25.
Minnesota is joined by six Big Ten teams, including three in the top 12. Penn State is ranked second, while Illinois is fourth overall. Following behind Minnesota's No. 6 ranking is Nebraska (11) Purdue (13), Michigan (20) and Ohio State (25). Minnesota has already faced two ranked teams this season, while the third was ranked following their meeting. Minnesota fell to then-No. 2 Southern Cal, who is now ranked ninth and Texas, who was ranked fourth. Minnesota defeated Oregon, who is now ranked 16th in the polls.
Minnesota will compete in the Northern Iowa Tournament, Sept. 9-10 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On Friday, Minnesota faces St. Louis at 5 p.m. and will turn around and play Kansas (10 a.m.) and No. 14 Northern Iowa (7 p.m.) next Saturday.
