The Big Ten Conference has awarded senior libero Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) the Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by the conference office. This marks Minnesota's first award of the season and Granquist's fourth defensive weekly honor of her career.
Granquist helped the Golden Gophers to back-to-back wins over No. 4 Texas, marking the first time an opponent has swept the Longhorns since 2000. In the series, Granquist averaged 6.2 digs per set when she had 20 in the first match (Sept. 2) an 17 the next night (Sept. 3) as the Gophers won six-straight sets. Granquist only had two reception errors the entire weekend in 48 attempts, putting her percentage at .958. She also recorded nine assists over the two matches.
Granquist and the rest of the Golden Gophers are on the road at the Northern Iowa Tournament, Sept. 9-10. On Friday, Minnesota faces St. Louis at 5 p.m. and will turn around and play Kansas (10 a.m.) and No. 14 Northern Iowa (7 p.m.) next Saturday.
