Gophers Set to Hit the Track

The University of Minnesota women's track and field team is set to open up the 2012 indoor season this weekend. The Gophers will be in two locations to kick off 2012. One portion of the team (sprints/jumps/hurdles) will be at the Holiday Inn Invitational (Friday-Saturday) and the rest of the squad will be at home at the Northwest Open on Saturday.

LAST SEASON REVIEW
Minnesota is coming off a third place finish at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The Gophers return three athletes that placed in the top five at the championships. Seniors Alena Brooks, Chimerem Okoroji and Stephanie Price all return in high hopes for the 2012 season. Brooks took third in the 400 meters with a time of 55.04, Price clocked in at 16:31.88 in the 5,000 and 9:25.62 in 3,000 which landed here a third place finish in each race. Price's time in the 5,000 was the fourth-fastest time in school history. Okoroji finished with a career best time of 7.43 in the 60-meter dash, which was good for the second-fastest time in Gopher history.
THE GOLDEN GOPHER COACHING STAFF
Matt Bingle is in his sixth season as the Golden Gophers head women's track & field coach. He was promoted to Director of Women's Track and Field/Cross Country during the offseason. Bingle heads an extremely experienced coaching staff that includes assistants Gary Wilson (Distance) Lynne Anderson (Throwers), Sarah Hesser (Distance) and Caroline White (Pole Vault).
