MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota found itself trailing for the first time this season, but rallied from a nine-point first half deficit to defeat Richmond, 72-57, on Sunday evening at Williams Arena.
Senior forward Rodney Williams scored seven of his team-high 15 points during a two-minute, 16-second stretch in the opening half that sparked the Gophers (4-0) and helped them close the half on a 17-7 run to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room.
Senior forward Trevor Mbakwe had his best game of the season since returning from surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. Mbakwe just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Andre Hollins tallied 14 points, including 11 in the decisive second half, while tying his career-high by dishing out seven assists, and junior guard Austin Hollins added 13 points. Sophomore guard Joe Coleman also reached double digits with 10 points, while grabbing six boards.
Richmond junior forward Derrick Williams led all scorers with 16 points, while 5-8 sophomore guard Kendall Anthony came off the bench to score 13 for the Spiders (3-1). Richmond had opened its season with two wins by greater than 40 points, but fell in its first road game.
The Gophers have a tough assignment in their next game, as they face ninth-ranked Duke on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (CT) in the Battle for Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. That game can be seen on AXS.TV, and can be heard live on the Gopher Radio Network.
