The University of Minnesota softball team pulled off a comeback victory over James Madison Friday night in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Golden Gophers (8-2) got down 1-0 early but clawed back to garner the win behind a three-RBI night from junior Alex Davis and a one-hit performance by sophomore Sara Moulton.
After surrendering an unearned run in the top of the first, Moulton and the Gophers shutdown the Dukes (2-2). Accompanied by a stingy Gopher defense, the Eagan, Minn. native only allowed one more JMU base runner the rest of the contest.
Davis' tied up the game in the bottom of the third when she singled in freshman Tyler Walker on a single to right field. Walker got the Gophers on the board by scoring from second and beating the throw home. Davis went 2-for-3 on the night with three runs batted in.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that the Maroon and Gold gained the lead when Davis drilled a two-RBI single to the right field fence. Freshman Kaitlyn Richardson and junior Kari Dorle, who had each singled the two previous at bats, scored from second and third to give Minnesota a 3-1 lead.
Richardson and Dorle supplemented the Gopher offense with the freshman third baseman going 1-for-2 with a walk and the junior catcher going 1-for-1 at the plate with a pair of walks.
The Gophers would force JMU to go three up, three down in the final two innings to close out the game. Moulton would end up fanning three of the six faced batters to reach a total of 10 strikeouts for the game.
Minnesota returns to action at the Carolina Classic tomorrow afternoon to face No. 24 North Carolina (9-0) at 2 p.m. Following the completion of that game, the Gophers will get a rematch with James Madison, which is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
