TJ Oakes Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

University of Minnesota junior pitcher TJ Oakes has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday Feb. 27, 2010 by the conference office. It's the first time Oakes has received the award since his freshman season and the first weekly award by a Gopher pitcher since he won it on May 17. 2010.
The 6-foot-5-inch right-handed starter allowed just two hits in the 1-0 shutout win over UW-Milwaukee, last Friday. Scattering just one hit in the third and another in the fourth, Oakes pitched 7.0 scoreless innings. In his seven innings of work, he struck out four and walked one to hold the Panthers to just a .095 batting average. With the win on Friday, he improved to 2-0 on the season and has yet to allow an earned run during his junior campaign. He is tied for the league lead in ERA and had held the opposition to a .190 batting average in 12.2 innings pitched.
The Golden Gophers host the Dairy Queen Classic this weekend. Minnesota will host New Mexico State on Thursday at 4:05 p.m. as a separate game from the DQ Classic. The Gophers and Aggies will then compete again on Friday as a part of the classic at 6:35 p.m. Minnesota will also face West Virginia on Saturday (6:35 p.m.) and Nebraska on Sunday (3:05 p.m.). In all, six games will be held as a part of the tournament, two each day. Full schedule listed below.
