Minnesota Has Full Weekend of Action

The No. 10 Minnesota men's track and field team will be in two locations this weekend. A group of the distance runners will head out west to run at the Flotrack Husky Classic and the rest of the team will compete back down at Iowa State in the ISU Classic.

LAST WEEK
Most of the team rested up last weekend, but the throwers and some multi-event athletes were still competing. In the shot put Trey Davis finished fourth overall with a toss of 18.20m (59-8 ½) and Mark Jennings finished with a mark of 16.25m (53-3 ¾) in Lincoln, NE. Micah Hegerle finished second in the weight throw after he landed a 20.29m (66-7) on his final throw inside the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Jon Lehman took third for the Gophers after landing a throw of 19.93m (65-4 ¾) and Quentin Mege finished in sixth with a mark of 19.11m (62-8 ½).
Competing here locally were a handful of Gophers. Minnesota took the top three spots in the 800m with Marcus Paulson finishing first after clocking in at 1:54.96, while Matt Volz was second at 1:55.47 and Paul Hilsen was in the third spot at 1:55.49.
The Gophers also had four top finshers in the pole vault. Zach Siegmeier and Jack Szmanda each were at the top of the group after they both cleared 4.90m (16-0 3/4). Adam Isakson and Logan Markuson were each behind them in after clearing 4.75m (15-7) each.
THE GOLDEN GOPHER COACHING STAFF
Steve Plasencia enters his fourth season as the Golden Gophers head women's track & field coach. Plasencia was Plasencia was awarded his fifth consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year award, adding the 2011 indoor accolade to those from the 2009 and 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons. Plasencia heads an extremely experienced coaching staff that includes assistants Scott Berggren, Paul Thornton, Lynden Reder, Steve White and Roy Griak.
