Hey all!!!
This weekend was so important for us for three big reasons. First, it was our first road trip this year with the team so we had a couple of hours in the vans to hang out together and have some good times. Second, it was our first Big Ten match of the season so we really wanted to begin this competition with a strong start. Finally, we played the Badgers in our annual Battle of the Border!
During this weekend, I got to witness some brains hard at work. While at restaurants, we often play a game with the team where we have to guess the answers of some trivia questions. This time, the question was "How many music albums sold over two millions copies in the USA?" Yul's (Yuliana Umanets) and Freshy (Tereza Brichacova) guessed the right answer, which was 8 albums. Po (Pauline Gilbert) came up with the SMARTEST answer ever and guessed "15 million". Her answer was off only by 14,999,992 (sarcasm).
Once we got to the hotel, we all had sooo many bags and tried to fit into one elevator (so that would be 12 people plus bags). Everyone squeezed in and we started to go up to our different floors. Once we reached the third floor, Dasha had to get out the elevator just to let Mag and Tash out! Unfortunately for her, the elevator closed before she could get back in. And even worse, only one elevator was working! She had some time to meditate while waiting for the elevator reach the 11th floor!
After that, I thought I had seen enough crazy adventures for the day, but it wasn't over! After coming back from dinner, Juls and Po asked the guy at the front desk to find where they could buy some Gatorade and food. He told them that there was a place literally two blocks away. I could not believe it when they asked the receptionist if the shuttle could drive them there! After 20 minutes of negotiation, they ended up walking there and according to them it seemed a lot further away than two blocks and that it was REALLY cold! Colder than in Minnesota? Sure… hard to believe!
On Sunday morning, we all woke up and were ready to focus on our main objective: winning the Battle of the Borders! I was rooming with Julia and Po, and as soon as they woke up, they kept screaming: "Let's kill the Badgers, Let's kill the Badgers!" Once we got to the courts, we turned on our "Beast mode"! Even though we had a slow start with doubles, we were able to bring the energy up to the next level and dominate during singles to show our fight and heart! Juls and Tash finished their single matches first to bring us to a 2-1 lead. Quickly after that, Yuls received her single point: it was then tied 2-2.
At that time, three girls were still playing: Freshy, Lex, and me. Freshy stayed focused and controlled her nerves really well to bring us our third point. Lex clinched the match with her win and put us at 4-2. It was a great win for her considering all of the pressure. I ended up winning in the super tiebreaker to finish our match with a 5-2 victory over the Badgers. This was a great accomplishment for the team since we have not beaten the Badgers for the last three years. It is also a great start for the Big Ten season. This win proves that we are all prepared to do well and work hard to reach our goal of making it to the NCAA this year!
Once again, thank you so much for all of the support we receive and please come watch us in our next home match against Northwestern and Illinois.
GO GOPHERS!!!
