Gophers to Recognize Cowles Family

The late John Cowles, Jr. and Sage Cowles will be recognized for their contributions to the University of Minnesota softball program in a pre-game tribute on Sunday, May 6th at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The Cowles family's deep-rooted commitment to racial and gender equality has been apparent both in the family business as well as their philanthropic efforts in the community. John and Sage played significant roles in building the Guthrie Theatre, the creation of the Cowles Conservatory in the Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center and the Cowles Center for Dance in Minneapolis. Additionally, they were avid supporters of gender equity in sports. John served on the Women's Athletics Advisory Committee for many years, and the couple funded the University of Minnesota's women's softball stadium, called Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, which was named after their daughter, a former college softball player.
Following the John and Sage on-field recognition, Coach Jerry Kill and Jane Sage Cowles will throw out the first pitch in honor of those who have been affected by cancer, which is a part of Gopher Softball's Strike-Out Cancer series
