The Golden Gopher volleyball program ranked third overall nationally in regular season attendance in 2011 and second in the Big Ten Conference. Only Hawaii and Nebraska drew more fans than Minnesota last season.
A total of 47,896 fans went through the turn styles to average 3,992 fans per regular season matches. That number marked the highest average attendance in recent years. Minnesota recorded 46,735 fans (averaging 3,116) in 2010 and 51,541 (averaging 3,965) in 2009. In the last decade, the Gophers have maintained an average of over 2,000 fans to see a volleyball match and nearly 4,000 in three of the past five years.
Minnesota will host another 14 matches at home this season. The Gophers open the home season with the Diet Coke Classic Aug. 31-Sept 1 when Miami (OH), Long Island and Albany come to town. After a Miami/Albany match at 5 p.m. (Aug. 31), the Gophers will play Long Island at 8 p.m. Four matches will then be held on Sept. 1 with the Gophers playing Miami at 10 a.m., while Long Island and Albany face each other at noon. In the night session, Long Island and Albany will play the 5 p.m. game. Minnesota and Albany wrap up the event at 8 p.m.
The Battle in the Barn will be held on Oct. 28 in Williams Arena as Illinois visits Minneapolis at 1 p.m.
