University of Minnesota director of athletics Norwood Teague announced today that David Benedict will be joining the Gophers' Athletics management team and will serve as the department's executive associate athletic director.
Benedict comes to Minnesota from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he has worked under Teague and then served as the Rams' interim director of athletics following Teague's departure in mid-May. Benedict is expected to begin his new role at Minnesota on July 9th.
"David is a star," Teague said. "I have a long working relationship with him and he is a superior person and a great addition to our staff. I want to emphasize that David is an addition to our staff. We have a long way to go and a short time to get there and he will be a key element in this process. This is a great move for Gopher Athletics and a great move for him. I could not be more excited that David has agreed to join us."
Prior to being named interim AD, Benedict served as the executive associate athletic director at VCU, overseeing numerous aspects of the athletic department, including student-athlete welfare and sport supervision.
Like Teague, Benedict's resume includes a long history of successful fundraising campaigns, having served as head of VCU Athletics' development operations and previously as lead developer for businesses and universities in Arizona and California.
Before joining the staff at VCU in 2010, Benedict worked as an associate athletic director of development at Arizona State University and as the executive director of ASU's fund raising arm, the Sun Angel Foundation. He also served as senior associate athletic director for external relations at Long Beach State University and worked in the private sector as senior vice president for the Scottsdale Health Care Foundation.
A former student-athlete who played football at Southern Utah University, Benedict graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He also holds a master's degree in sports management from New Mexico Highlands University.
