The University of Minnesota women's basketball program announced its 2012-13 non-conference schedule Wednesday, with the Golden Gophers set to play 14 games prior to their Big Ten Conference opener, including 10 contests at Williams Arena. Game times and television rights will be released at a later date.
Minnesota has the opportunity to play up to 12 teams that made postseason appearances last season, most notably Kansas, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Pam Borton's squad will take part in three tournaments early in the season, two at Williams Arena and one south of the border in Cancun, Mexico.
The first of two-straight tournaments at the Barn, the Minnesota Opening Tournament will see the Gophers take on Washington State and either South Dakota State or Villlanova on Nov. 10-11, while Minnesota will face Ohio University and either UNLV or Maine during the ninth-annual Subway Classic on Nov. 17-18.
The Maroon and Gold will participate in the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 22-24), and will have the chance to play Missouri, Wisconsin-Green Bay, James Madison, Richmond and Wichita State. The Phoenix advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round last season, while both the Dukes and the Shockers played in the WNIT, with James Madison taking home runner-up honors in the post-season tournament.
The Gophers return to Minneapolis for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge contest on Nov. 29 vs. a Virginia team that advanced to the WNIT Quarterfinals, before making the trip to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Jayhawks.
Five-straight home contests will close out the non-league schedule for Minnesota, with games against Denver (Dec. 5), UMKC (Dec. 7), Robert Morris (Dec. 9), Northern Iowa (Dec. 21) and Creighton (Dec. 30).
The Golden Gophers' first games will be a pair of exhibitions at Williams Arena, with the Maroon and Gold taking on Concordia University, St. Paul on Oct. 31 and Minnesota State University, Mankato on Nov. 4.
Minnesota's Big Ten schedule will be released at a later date.
