Big Ten Names Three Gophers to Watch List

The Big Ten Conference today announced its 2012-13 Women's Golfers to Watch List, a list that includes three Golden Gophers - senior Jackie Shepherd (Delafield, Wis.), junior Banchalee Theinthong (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Carmen Laguna (Tomares-Sevilla, Spain).
Shepherd, a 2012 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar, recently won the 17th Minnesota Women's State Match Play Championship at Mankato Golf Club. She finished her junior campaign with a stroke average of 76.36, the second-lowest on the team and the eighth-lowest single-season effort in program history.
Shepherd will enter her senior season with a career stroke average of 77.62, currently the third-lowest in program history.
Theinthong led Minnesota last season in stroke average during the fall and spring at 75.2 and 76.2, respectively. Her combined stroke average of 75.8 as a sophomore is the fourth-lowest in the history of Minnesota golf and her current career average of 76.72 would be the second-lowest in Gopher Golf history but her 58 career rounds falls two shy of the minimum.
Theinthong was named Second Team All-Big Ten following her sophomore campaign, becoming the first Gopher to be named All-Big Ten since Amy Dahle following the 1997 season.
Laguna, also a 2012 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar, played in all 10 of the Gophers' tournaments and finished with a stroke average of 77.53, the third-lowest on the team.
