Chicago Bears Name Former Gopher Trestman Head Coach

Former Gopher Marc Trestman was named the head coach of the Chicago Bears earlier today. He becomes the 14th head coach in franchise history. He also becomes the third former Gopher to currently lead a major professional sports team, joining Todd Richards (NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets) and Kevin McHale (NBA’s Houston Rockets).
Trestman played at Minnesota from 1974-77. In 1974, he was a backup quarterback behind Tony Dungy and appeared in five games. Trestman attempted 19 passes on the season and also ran the ball 19 times. His first collegiate pass was a 35-yard completion.
Trestman saw limited action in four games in 1975 as he dealt with an arm injury. He redshirted during the 1976 season.
Trestman returned to action in 1977, but played in only four games. However, he did start against Northwestern on Oct. 15 and led Minnesota to a 13-7 win. Trestman rushed for the only touchdown of his Gopher career in the victory.
Trestman joins the Bears after winning back-to-back Grey Cup championships with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
