Sage Cowles, a long-time University of Minnesota donor and advocate of the University's athletic program, passed away Thursday at the age of 88. Cowles and her late husband, John, were avid supporters of the arts and the value of physical development in education in the Twin Cities area.
An ambassador for women's athletics, Cowles helped fund Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, the home of the Golden Gopher softball team. Other contributions she and her husband gave to the University included funding for the Title IX Weight Room housed at the Ridder Arena/Baseline Tennis Center facility as well as several athletic scholarships.
The Cowles' first gift to the University of Minnesota was made in 1966.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sage," said University of Minnesota head softball coach Jessica Allister. "The Cowles family is a great supporter of Minnesota athletics, Golden Gopher softball, and the sport of softball as a whole. Our team had the opportunity to spend some time with Sage two seasons ago. Her generosity, spirit, and lifelong commitment to education and equity left a lasting impression. She was an incredible woman and a tremendous role model."
