Three Gophers scored in double figures as the University of Minnesota (4-1) women's basketball team Navy (4-2) defeated visiting Navy, 62-55, Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena on Military Appreciation Day.
Rachel Banham was the Gophers' top scorer with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Amanda Zahui B. secured her third double-double in the last four games with 16 points and a team-best 13 rebounds. Kayla Hirt notched a season-high 10 points and three assists and Sari Noga added nine points and two assists.
With her 18 points, Banham tied Ellen Kramer for the No. 12 spot on Minnesota's career record chart with 1,336 points and extended her double-digit scoring streak to 21 games.
As a team, Minnesota shot .426 from the floor, including .625 shooting (5-for-8) by Hirt. The Gophers were 6-of-13 from three-point range, including three each from Banham and Noga.
Jade Geif recorded a double-double for Navy with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kara Pollinger added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Gophers fell behind early, 7-0, but fought back into the game and eventually took a two-point lead, 11-9, at 13:29 thanks to an 11-2 run from Minnesota. The two teams would tie the game four time and trade leads five times before the Gophers closed out the half with a 14-4 run to head into halftime with a 31-25 lead.
Banham was Minnesota's top scorer and rebounder in the half, posting 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and three rebounds, while Hirt added 10 points and three assists.
The Gophers would go ahead by as many as nine points in the opening minutes of the second half, but Navy cut the home team's advantage to one, 42-43, with a three-pointer near the 11-minute mark. Noga would answer with a three-pointer of her own to extend Minnesota's lead back to four, 46-42.
The trend would continue through the next five minutes of play, as every time the Midshipmen closed the gap, Minnesota would stop their momentum.
The Gophers made 10 of their 12 free throw attempts, including going 8-for-10 in the final four minutes of the game to seal the 62-55 win.
