Gophers Moves Up to No. 4 in Polls

The University of Minnesota volleyball program moved up two spots in the recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

Minnesota, which held the No. 6 spot in the preseason, cracked the top-five after a 4-0 record, all of which were three-set wins. As a team in the UAB/Samford Challenge, Minnesota hit .339 and averaged 14.42 kills per set. Along with 22 aces, Minnesota also had 204 digs for 17.00 per set.

Penn State takes over the No. 1 spot, followed by Stanford and Southern Cal. In all, the Big Ten Conference has eight in the latest poll. Along with the Nittany Lions and the Gophers, Michigan is also in the top 10 at No. 7. Also in the poll is Nebraska (13), Illinois (19), Michigan State (20), Purdue (22) and Ohio State (23). Wisconsin is receiving votes.

The Golden Gophers open the 2013 home season this weekend when they host the Diet Coke Classic, Sept. 6-7, at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers welcome Ball State, Duke and Western Illinois to the Pav this weekend. Minnesota opens the home season at 7:30 p.m., Friday against Ball State and follow with 11 a.m. (Western Illinois) and 7:30 p.m. (Duke) matches Saturday.
