Five Gophers Qualify for Regional Main Draw

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Minnesota women's tennis team will send five singles players and four doubles pairings to main-draw play at the 2014 USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at Oklahoma State's Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. Three Gopher qualifiers will join seniors Tereza Brichacova and Aria Lambert in the singles main draw after the qualifying draw was completed Thursday.
The singles draw will consist of 64 players and the doubles bracket will begin with 64 tandems.
Top qualifying seed Caroline Ryba received a bye in the first round of the draw before downing Nebraska's Spurti Shivalingaiah in three sets to pave her way to the main draw. Juniors Jessika Mozia and Paula Rincon-Otero each won two matches to qualify.
Mozia kicked off her day with a straight-set defeat of Madison Cook of St. Louis before dispatching Caroline Henderson of Kansas, 6-1, 6-2. Rincon-Otero followed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Melania Jaglarz with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph against Iowa State's Samantha Budai.
Also in action Thursday were Mehvish Safdar, Maja Vujic, and Kendall Heitzner. Safdar blanked Nika Munoz of Oral Roberts, 6-0, 6-0 before taking a loss in her second match of the day. Vujic dropped a three-set match to start, but won convincingly in her consolation match against Arkansas' Mia Jurasic. Heitzner dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Monique Krutak of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
Doubles of pairings of Brichacova and Safdar, Mozia and Heitzner, Courter and Rincon-Otero, and Lamber and Vujic will represent the Maroon and Fold in doubles. Brichacova and Safdar are seeded fifth.
The Gophers complete their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H.
