Peter Mortell has been announced as a candidate for the 2014 Ray Guy Award, which identifies the nation's top collegiate punter. The Minnesota redshirt junior was named to the award's preseason watch list.
The current list of candidates will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists to be announced on Nov. 14. Football Bowl Subdivision athletics communications personnel, coaches, media representatives and past Ray Guy Award winners will vote for three finalists, who will be named on Nov. 24. The voting body will cast ballots again to decide the winner.
Mortell is averaging 45.1 yards per punt through the Golden Gophers' first eight games, a clip that ranks second in school history for single-season average. He has boomed 14 punts longer than 50 yards, including a 61-yarder. Mortell has placed 12 punts inside the 20.
