MINNEAPOLIS - The top-ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team is headed up to Duluth, Minn., this weekend to play against one of its biggest rivals. Senior captain Rachel Ramsey looks forward to going back to the special place where the Gophers won the national championship game her freshman year.
Gopher Sports: What is your favorite thing about playing against UMD?
Rachel Ramsey: My favorite part is the history of the rivalry with Minnesota Duluth. When we go up there, we are not just playing for our team or ourselves, we are playing for the alumni and the entire history of the program.
GS: What is the first road trip of the year like?
RR: It's chaotic. Our team is very superstitious when it comes to pregame rituals, where you sit on the bus and even pregame meals. When we are on the road, there are always a lot of specifics so we need to work out the kinks.
GS: How have you and the team prepared for the upcoming series at UMD?
RR: We have prepared how we have for the last few games and how we will prepare for games in the future. Playing a top team in the country and a top team in our conference, it's a lot of mental work, systems, and focus on the little things on the ice.
GS: As a team, what do you believe will be necessary in order to leave Duluth with a sweep?
RR: A lot of grit, toughness and discipline. It takes a lot of discipline when playing a team like Duluth because it's very easy to get riled up and let your emotions fly. I think if we stay even and play our game, we will come out of Duluth with two wins.
Puck drop between the Gophers and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth. Fans can watch the action live at NCHC.tv/UMD (subscription required) and listen live at GopherSports.com.
