Mozia Gains Gophers' Lone Singles Win

HANOVER, N.H. - The Minnesota women's tennis team went 1-3 in singles and 0-2 in doubles in its second day at the the Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H. Saturday. Junior Jessika Mozia won in three sets to give the Gophers their only win of the afternoon.
Mozia dropped her first set of the day to host Dartmouth's Akiko Okuda, but rallied from behind to take the match with two hard-fought set wins for a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8) final score.
Also facing Big Green opponents in singles, Aria Lambert, Caroline Ryba, and Julia Courter suffered straight-set losses. Doubles pairings of Paula Rincon-Otero and Mehvish Safdar and Maja Vujic and Kendall Heitzner lost decisions of 8-5 and 8-4, respectively.
With the victory, Mozia upped her fall singles record to 8-3, giving her the most wins on the team.
The Big Green Invitational, which wraps up Sunday, will cap the Gophers' fall season. Minnesota begins the spring season Jan. 18 at the Baseline Tennis Center with matches against Milwaukee and North Dakota. The team is coming off a 2013-14 campaign in which it registered a seven-win improvement from the previous season and posted its highest overall win total (17) and Big Ten win total (six) since 2003.
