University of Minnesota head women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings today announced that 6-foot-1 guard Danielle Garven (Scarborough, Ont./Pope John Paul II Catholic School), a member of the Canadian U17 National team, signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Gophers beginning next season.

"We are thrilled to be adding Danielle to our Gopher family," Stollings said. "She is a scorer who understands what it means to play on a big stage and in big games. Danielle spent multiple years playing internationally for the Canadian National Team. Her versatility to play both inside and outside will be an immediate asset for our program."

In 2014, Garven competed at the FIBA U17 World Championships with Team Canada, while she helped her squad win silver at the 2013 FIBA U16 World Championships in Mexico by shooting .430 from three-point range over the five-game tournament.

"I felt like I belonged at Minnesota. The academics are outstanding, the fast-paced style of basketball is inviting and I was treated so well. It felt like family," Garven said of why she chose to become a Gopher. "I also loved the coaching staff. Not only is the style of play a big draw, but so are they."

Playing in one of the top high school conferences in the Toronto area, Garven currently leads Pope John Paul II Catholic in scoring. She has already posted six games of 20 or more points, including a 30-point game against Libermann in September, and was named the team's Most Valuable Player following her junior season.

"Danielle brings length and athleticism to the wing spot. She has the ability to score in a variety of ways, and is an effective rebounder at both ends," Canadian National Team Performance Analyst Jodi Gram said. "I have no doubt she will be an asset to the Minnesota program and will fit in well in the Big Ten Conference. I look forward to watching her continued development."

A four-star recruit, Garven is ranked 86th overall by espnW in the 2015 HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings with a scouts' grade of 94, while she also ranks in at No. 13 at her position.
