Five Things You Need To Know
1. Minnesota travels to Nebraska on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game (Gophers are 8-3 in their last 11 games played at 11 a.m.) against the Cornhuskers. The Gophers lead the all-time series 30-22-2 and snapped a 16-game losing streak to Nebraska when they won 34-23 at TCF Bank Stadium in 2013. Nebraska has won the last seven meetings between the two teams at Memorial Stadium and the last time Minnesota beat the Huskers in Lincoln was 1960 when it prevailed 26-14. The 1960 game was also Minnesota's most recent win overall against Nebraska prior to last season. The Gophers are 8-10 all-time on the road at Nebraska.
2. The Gophers are 8-4 in their last 12 Big Ten games, as they have posted home wins against Iowa (2014), Purdue (2014), Northwestern (2014) Nebraska (2013) and Penn State (2013) and road wins at Michigan (2014), Northwestern (2013) and Indiana (2013). Three of Minnesota's four defeats came came to ranked teams in Ohio State (2014), Michigan State (2013) and Wisconsin (2013). The Gophers also lost on the road this year at Illinois. The 8-4 mark is the best record for Minnesota in an 12-game conference stretch since it went 9-3 from Nov. 11, 1972 - Sept. 14, 1974. Minnesota beat Northwestern (twice), Wisconsin (twice), Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Illinois, while it lost to Ohio State (twice) and Michigan in that span.
3. A win on Saturday would give Minnesota an 8-3 record. More importantly a win would give the Gophers a 5-2 record in Big Ten play. The last time Minnesota was 5-2 in the Big Ten was 2003, when the Gophers started conference play with road wins at Penn State and Northwestern. Minnesota also topped Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin that year and fell to Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa in the Big Ten to finish 5-3 in the league. Minnesota has won 5 or more Big Ten games in a season 18 different times and only five times since 1969. The Gophers were 4-4 in the Big Ten last year and are 4-2 this year, giving Minnesota its first back-to-back seasons of four Big Ten wins since 1999 (5-3 in B1G) and 2000 (4-4 in B1G).
4. The Gophers are 7-3 with three games (includes bowl) to play this year. Minnesota finished the season 8-5 last year. If Minnesota were to win eight games this year it would be the first time the Gophers posted consecutive eight-win seasons since 2002 (8 wins) and 2003 (10 wins). It would also be the fifth time since 1906 that Minnesota would win eight games in consecutive seasons. The Gophers won eight games in consecutive seasons in 1934-1935, 1940-1941 and 1960-1961.
5. Minnesota is 7-3, which means it is bowl eligible for the third straight year under Coach Kill. The Gophers will play in their 17th bowl game in program history when the regular season ends. Minnesota has played in three straight bowl games one time before, as it played in five straight bowl games from 2002-2006 under former coach Glen Mason. Kill joins Mason as only the second Minnesota coach ever to take the Gophers to three straight bowl games.
