David Cobb is one of 16 semi-finalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The list will be narrowed to finalists on Dec. 10, with the winner being announced at the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards Banquet Jan. 14 in Tyler, Texas.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year college.

Cobb, who played high school football at Ellison High School in Killeen, Texas, leads all players from Texas and ranks eighth in the nation in rushing yards with 1,430 this season. He holds Minnesota's senior rushing record, and is 35 yards shy of breaking the school's overall single-season record set by Laurence Maroney in 2005.

More than 30 percent of the Golden Gophers' all-purpose yards and 35.8 percent of their total offense comes from Cobb. His 12 touchdowns lead the team and tie him for fifth in the Minnesota season records. He set a new career high with three touchdowns against Ohio State.

Cobb has recorded 12 career 100-yard rushing games (six this year), and the Gophers are 9-3 in those games. Both of Cobb's 200-yard games have come this fall, as he ran for 220 against Middle Tennessee and 207 against San Jose State.

Before his breakout junior season (1,202 yards and seven touchdowns), Cobb had only 11 carries for Minnesota. His transformation into one of the top running backs in program history is a testament to his tenacity, one of the premises of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
