Five Things You Need To Know

1. Minnesota travels to Wisconsin on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game against the Badgers. The Gophers lead the all-time series 59-56-8 but have lost the last 10 games to Wisconsin. Minnesota last won in 2003, when it posted a 37-34 win at the Metrodome. The Gophers last won at Wisconsin in 1994 when they triumphed 17-14. The winner on Saturday will advance to the Big Ten Football Championship game in Indianapolis on Dec. 6 and will face Ohio State.

2. The Gophers are 9-4 in their last 13 Big Ten games, as they have posted home wins against Iowa (2014), Purdue (2014), Northwestern (2014) Nebraska (2013) and Penn State (2013) and road wins at Michigan (2014), Nebraska (2014), Northwestern (2013) and Indiana (2013). Three of Minnesota's four defeats came came to ranked teams in Ohio State (2014), Michigan State (2013) and Wisconsin (2013). The 9-4 mark is the best record for Minnesota in a 13-game conference stretch since it went 9-4 from Nov. 11, 1972 - Oct. 12, 1974 (beat Northwestern twice, Wisconsin twice, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Illinois, while it lost to Ohio State twice, Michigan and Indiana in that span).

3. A win at Wisconsin would give Minnesota a 9-3 record. More importantly a win would give the Gophers a 6-2 record in the Big Ten. The last - and only other - time Minnesota was 6-2 in the Big Ten was 1973 (finished third). The Gophers have won six Big Ten games only five times. In addition to 1973, Minnesota was 6-1 in 1967, 1961 and 1960. The Gophers finshed Big Ten play in 1940 at 6-0. Including this year, Minnesota has won five or more Big Ten games in a season 19 different times, but only six times since 1969. The Gophers were 4-4 in the Big Ten last year and are 5-2 this year, giving Minnesota its first back-to-back seasons of four Big Ten wins since 1999 (5-3 in B1G) and 2000 (4-4 in B1G).

4. The Gophers are 8-3 this year after finishing last season with an 8-5 record. Minnesota has now posted back-to-back eight win seasons for the first time since 2002 (8 wins) and 2003 (10 wins). This is also only the fifth time since 1906 that Minnesota has won eight games in consecutive seasons (1934-35, 1940-41 and 1960-61). If Minnesota were to earn that ninth win this year, it would be only the eighth time in history that the Gophers hit that milestone and the second time in the last 109 years. Minnesota won 14 games in 1903; 13 in 1904; 10 in 2003, 1905, 1900 and nine in 1902 and 1901.

5. Minnesota is ranked No. 22 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. It is the first time that the Gophers are ranked in the AP poll since Oct. 26, 2008, (78 games), when they were No. 20. Wisconsin is ranked 14th, which means the Gophers and Badgers will meet as ranked teams for the fifth time overall and for the first since 2005 (No. 23 Wisconsin beat No. 22 Minnesota 38-34). This year is the third time ever (1983 and 1990) that Minnesota will end the season against three ranked teams (Ohio State, at Nebraska and Wisconsin). It is also the second time ever that the Gophers will end the season against two ranked teams on the road. Minnesota lost 19-0 at No. 2 Notre Dame in 1938 before winning 21-0 at No. 12 Wisconsin.
