Claeys Nominated for Broyles Award Again

Under Claeys' watch this year, Minnesota's defense has held nine teams below their season scoring averages. The Gophers have limited their last six opponents to at least 11 points below their average, and the last three to 13 or more below. Overall, Minnesota has allowed 22.5 points per contest.
Minnesota has intercepted 13 passes and recovered 14 fumbles, helping give the team a +11 turnover margin (second in the Big Ten). In addition, the Gophers have held four teams under 100 rushing yards this season: Eastern Illinois (99), San Jose State (68), Michigan (83) and Iowa (84).
When Minnesota's defense is clicking, it is one of the best units in the Big Ten. A few examples of Claeys' defense locking down opponents in the second half:

For the second year in a row, associate head coach and defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys has been nominated for the Frank Broyles Award. The award recognizes the top assistant coach in college football.
The winner will be announced Dec. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock, Ark. The award is presented by the Rotary Club of Little Rock and Delta Dental. Michigan State's Pat Narduzzi was last year's honoree.

-On Oct. 18, the Gophers limited Purdue to seven points, 18 yards passing and 132 yards of offense (69 yards came on one play) in the second half. Purdue's six possessions in the second half went punt, touchdown, punt, punt, turnover on downs and interception.
-On Oct. 25, Illinois totaled 157 yards of offense in the first quarter. For the final three quarters, the Illini managed one offensive touchdown and 106 yards of offense, as they punted eight times and turned the ball over once.
-The Gophers gave up a touchdown to Iowa on its first possesion, but then held the Hawkeyes to 60 total yards on their next 10 drives (interception, punt, punt, fumble, punt, fumble, punt, punt, punt and punt).
-On Nov. 22 at Nebraska, the Gophers yielded 21 points (7 off a blocked FG returned for a TD) and 233 yards of offense in the first half. In the second half, Minnesota limited the Huskers to 3 points and 164 yards. The Huskers went punt, field goal, punt, punt, fumble in their five second-half drives.
