Five Things You Need To Know

1. Minnesota welcomes Iowa to TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game (Gophers are 7-2 in their last nine 11 a.m. games). Minnesota leads the series 61-44-2, but Iowa has won the last two meetings between the teams, which includes a 23-7 win in Minneapolis last year. The schools will be playing for the coveted Floyd of Rosedale, which is a solid bronze pig that is 15.5 inches tall, 21 inches long and weighs 98.3 pounds. Minnesota most recenlty earned the prize hog with a 22-21 win in 2011.

2. The Gophers are 7-3 in their last 10 Big Ten games (Oct. 19, 2013 - Oct. 18, 2014), as they have posted home wins against Purdue (2014), Northwestern (2014) Nebraska (2013) and Penn State (2013) and road wins at Michigan (2014), Northwestern (2013) and Indiana (2013). Minnesota's three defeats came on the road this year at Illinois, and last year at home against Wisconsin and on the road at Michigan State. The 7-3 mark is the best record for Minnesota in a 10-game conference stretch since it also went 7-3 from Nov. 11, 1967 - Nov. 23, 1968. Minnesota beat Indiana (twice), Wisconsin (twice), Illinois, Michigan State and Purdue, while it lost to Purdue, Michigan and Iowa.

3. Coach Kill is 23-23 at Minnesota. The Gophers were 9-16 after his first two seasons, but are 14-7, since giving him a .500 winning percentage leading the Maroon and Gold. Kill's record through his first 46 games is the best for a Gopher head coach since Cal Stoll was also 23-23 (includes games from 1972 through the first two games of the 1976 season). Before Kill and Stoll, the last Gopher coach with a better record through 46 games was the legendary Bernie Bierman, who was 36-6-4, which translates to an .826 winning percentage. The 1934-36 national championship seasons (Minnesota is the last team to win three straight national titles) are included in Bierman's first 46 games and the Gophers were 23-1 during that three-year stretch. Murray Warmath was 21-23-2 (includes games from 1954 throught the first game of the 1959 season) in his first 46 games leading the Gophers, while Glen Mason was 22-24.

4. A win on Saturday would give Minnesota a 7-2 record. More importantly a win would give the Gophers a 4-1 record in Big Ten play. The last time Minnesota was 4-1 in the Big Ten was 1990, when the Gophers started the season 3-0 with wins against Purdue, Northwestern and Indiana. Minnesota dropped a game at Ohio State, but then won at Wisconsin to get to 4-1. The Gophers finished 5-3 in the Big Ten in 1990.

5. Minnesota is 6-2, which means it is bowl eligible for the third straight year under Coach Kill. The Gophers will play in their 17th bowl game in program history when the regular season ends. Minnesota has only played in three straight bowl games one time before, as it played in five straight bowl games from 2002-2006 under former coach Glen Mason. Kill joins Mason as only the second Minnesota coach ever to take the Gophers to three straight bowl games.
