MINNEAPOLIS - Redshirt junior pole vaulter Sara Tseng enjoys the family-like atmosphere within the Gophers' track & field team. This season, she looks forward to spending time with her teammates and seeing what they can accomplish as a unit.
Tseng, a native of Richfield, Minn., set career-best marks during the indoor and outdoor seasons last spring. She cleared an indoor career-best 12-00.00 (3.66m) to place fourth at the Parents Day Open before recording a career-best vault of 12-01.50 (3.70m) at the UC San Diego Invite during the outdoor season.
What is your favorite thing about Gopher track & field?
Within such a large team, I still feel like we are a family. Friendships intermix between track & field and cross country girls.
What is your best memory with the team so far?
One of the best memories was participating in team cheers and all the pep talks before meets. Everyone is so full of energy and fighting for the same thing - to do well, to win as a team. It makes it real; we support one another to do our very best.
What has been your proudest accomplishment in your track & field career?
I remember setting a new PR, then cheering on my teammates at the Northwest Open last year. The whole pole vault group ended up PR-ing or tying their PR that day. I really enjoy doing well and pushing my teammates to also do well. We sink or swim as a team.
What are your major and career goals?
I'm majoring in kinesiology and searching for a career in the occupational health & safety field or ergonomics field.
How did you choose the University of Minnesota?
My parents attended the U of M, and were a large influence on my choice of school.
How did you first get into track & field?
I was a former gymnasts, and my high school was recruiting people for pole vault. The first people they turned to were gymnasts. I tried pole vault and having been vaulting ever since.
Were you involved in any other sports besides gymnastics growing up?
I tried out sports and activities like karate, swimming and softball growing up. I developed an interest for gymnastics, diving and pole vault in middle school and high school.
Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions?
Unfortunately nothing weird or crazy, just enough sleep the night before, coffee in the morning, and off to the meet I go.
What do you think makes being a Gopher so special?
"Once a Gopher, always a Gopher." I love how Gopher athletics is so friendly and family-like. It's like my home away from home.
What are you most looking forward to about the 2014-15 season?
I'm looking forward to seeing my teammates, competition, and seeing how hard we can fight as a team at every meet, especially Big Ten and NCAA competition.
