Dec. 15, 2014
University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics will be accepting toy and monetary donations at various Gopher athletic events this weekend to benefit Toys for Tots and St. Joseph's Home for Children, Dec. 18-20.
Fans are encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys or give monetary donations to any of the three Golden Gopher events as Gopher student-athletes will collect items at the facility main entrances.
The first opportunity is set for Thursday, December 18 as the Gopher wrestling program hosts Northwestern, 7 p.m., at the Sports Pavilion. On Friday, December, 19 at 7 p.m., the Gopher men's basketball team hosts Seattle University, followed by women's basketball hosting Liberty, 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 20.
Toys for Tots is a donation program started in 1947 by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The purpose is to collect toys during the holiday season to donate to families that cannot afford to buy presents for their children. In 2012, the Twin Cities Toys for Tots campaign distributed over 186,000 toys, books and stocking stuffers to over 126,000 children in the community, resulting in the sixth highest distribution in the nation.
St. Joseph's Home for Children, a program of Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, serves children and their families by addressing immediate needs for shelter and stability and offering long-term solutions to emotional and behavioral issues with quality mental health care.
Help us make the holidays brighter for those in need.
