The University of Minnesota Athletics department and Cub Foods partnered together to aide a lending hand to Second Harvest Heartland, today, Dec. 3, 2014.
Cub Foods donated more than $185,000 to Second Harvest Heartland, as a result of their Cubs Cares program. A two-week fundraiser and awareness effort in the state of Minnesota, the program ran fromOct. 12-25. The organization generated funds by giving their customers the option to round up their grocery bill to the nearest dollar and donate as the proceeds went to Second Harvest Heartland. Cub customers also contributed by purchasing pre-packaged Cub Cares bags of non-perishable food donations.
Gopher Athletics aided the fundraising efforts as well. Cub customers that donated entered a chance to win tickets to Gopher football games and other prizes. After the Gophers defeated Michigan, the Little Brown Jug traveling trophy also visited local Cub Foods locations.
Along with the check presentation, the University of Minnesota also used this opportunity to assist bagging food for Second Harvest Heartland. Nine Gopher student-athletes, U of M staff members, Goldy Gopher and Rebecca Kill, wife of Gopher head football coach Jerry Kill, were in attendance. The group bagged 1,450 pounds of food at Second Harvest, which also provided assistance to local families.
Gopher student athletes were there to help sort, bag and stock bags of apples. Assisting in the process were football's Tyler Hartmann and Noah Scarver, women's hockey's Milica McMillen, women's track's Anne Ferguson, Paige Peschel and Andie Zeman, former women's swimmer Kaela Anderson, diving's Jessica Ramberg and women's golfer Carmen Laguna.
