Gophers Set Spring Schedule

MINNEAPOLIS - With the 2014 season right around the corner, the University of Minnesota women's soccer team has begun their spring season. While hosting its fourth annual Gopher 7's Indoor Tournament, the Gophers will also play Big Ten broder rival, Wisconsin, as well as in-state competitor Minnesota State University, Mankato. The highlight of the spring season will be an international trip to Barcelona, Spain where the Gophers will not only sharpen their soccer skill-set but also immerse themselves in the local soccer culture.
After a strong 11-8-2 showing in 2013 as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Maroon and Gold will return 19 players from 2013 while adding two this spring. The roster will include 2013 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten selection, Tarah Hobbs as well as Gophers leading-scorer Katie Thyken.
The Gophers kicked off the first weekend of their annual Gopher 7's Indoor Tournament last weekend and will continue the competition on Sunday, March 2. The Gophers have welcomed Minnesota State, Iowa State, Drake among other regional teams for the 7v7 tournament taking place in the Indoor Football Complex on campus.
Next up, the Golden Gophers will travel to Barcelona, Spain for ten days as they train and explore the soccer-heavy culture from March 14-23. During that time, fans and family can follow the Gophers trip and keep up-to-date with all the action through a travel blog that will be posted on the website as well as on the Gopher Soccer social media outlets.
After returning to the United States, the Gophers will travel to the Savage Dome at the Savage Sports Center to host Big Ten opponent, Wisconsin, on Sunday March 30 at 1 p.m.. The Badgers finished the 2013 campaign at 10-7-2 and 5-5-1 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin will return 10 of their 11 starters including Big Ten Freshman of the Year Rose Lavelle.
The Gophers will close out their busy spring schedule by hosting the Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks on Sunday, April 6 at Shattuck St. Mary's at 2 p.m.
