MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Senior All-American Zach Siegmeier of the Minnesota men's track & field team has been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week after opening the outdoor campaign with a win in the pole vault at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.

The Lakewood, Ill., native cleared 5.40 meters on Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The mark stands as the best pole vault in the Big Ten this season and the second best performance in the nation.

Siegmeier is the defending Big Ten champion in both the outdoor and indoor pole vault. This week's honor is the first career accolade for the senior and Minnesota's first outdoor field honor since Quentin Mege on March 20, 2013.

The Gophers are off until early April and return to action with the Hamline Invitational and the Stanford Invitational on April 4-5.
