NPF Release | Chicago Bandits Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Minnesota softball senior pitcher Sara Moulton was selected as the fifth overall pick in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) College Draft, held at Ford Theatre inside the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum Monday night. The Chicago Bandits selected the Eagan, Minn. native with the first pick of the second round.

Seniors in college do not declare for the NPF Senior Draft, but are eligible to be selected by a franchise. That franchise then holds the rights to the player until she has completed her collegiate eligibility, at which point she is able to sign with the team and compete for an available roster spot.

Five former Gophers have played in the NPF: Shannon Beeler, Amber Hegland, Stephanie Klaviter, Wendy Logue, and current pitching coach Piper Ritter.

The defending NPF regular-season Champions also selected Estela Piñon from Arizona, Emily Allard from Northwestern, Cheyenne Coyle from Arizona State, and RT Cantillo from Ole Miss.

Moulton is 18-3 on the season with a 1.29 ERA that is good for 22nd in the nation. Her win total of 18 leads the Big Ten and is fourth in the country, while her 171 strikeouts rank her ninth in NCAA Division I. She has the school records for wins with 103, innings pitched with 932, complete games with 101, and shutouts with 44. Her 1,111 strikeouts is 11 shy of tying Ritter's mark of 1,122.

The senior hurler is a three-time All-Big Ten selection, a 2013 NFCA All-Region First Team member, and is a candidate for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award.

Moulton and the Gophers, off to a program-best 27-4 start with a 5-1 mark in the conference, are scheduled to host league foe and Border Battle rival Wisconsin this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
