ROSEMONT, Ill. - For the third time this season, Minnesota softball freshman Sara Groenewegen received Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after her performance in a weekend sweep of Penn State, the league announced Monday afternoon. After sharing the weekly top rookie honor with Purdue's Katy McJunkin and Nebraska's Marjani Knighten, Groenewegen is the only first-year player to be recognized this week.
The conference weekly award is Minnesota's seventh this season. In addition to three top freshman and a Pitcher of the Week Award, the Gophers' Sara Moulton earned three league Pitcher of the Week Awards.
Groenewegen, a top-25 for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy, was a force both at the plate and in the pitching circle against the Nittany Lions.
The White Rock, B.C. tossed the 21st no-hitter in Minnesota softball history in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, allowing just two baserunners who reached via hit by pitch and error and striking out eight. With her first no-hitter under her belt, Groenewegen is now 12-1 on the season with five shutouts, a 2.26 ERA, and 143 strikeouts.
In the batter's box, Groenewegen hit .400 on the weekend, going four-for-10 with a pair of doubles and four RBI. She scored one run and raised her season batting average nine points.
The Gophers, now 36-8 on the season with a 14-5 mark in the Big Ten, wrap up their regular season this week. Minnesota hosts North Dakota State in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium before traveling to Purdue for a three-game weekend series.
