MINNEAPOLIS - The Gopher women's hockey team was named the Female Team of the Year and Rachael Bona was named the Female Breakthrough Athlete of the Year as the University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics department held its annual Golden Goldys/Scholar Athlete banquet Monday night at TCF Bank Stadium.
Minnesota recognized both the athletic and academic achievements by honoring its 750 student-athletes at the annual awards gala. It was the eighth-annual Golden Goldys recognition and 25th of the Scholar Athlete banquet.
With an NCAA runner-up performance, women's hockey took home the team of the year award. The Gophers defeated Wisconsin in the Frozen Four semifinal but fell to Clarkson in the NCAA championship game. The Gophers posted a 38-2-1 overall record and secured a 26-1-1 WCHA record en route to winning the team's third-straight WCHA postseason title and the program's eighth regular season championship.
Junior Rachael Bona was named the Female Breakthrough Athlete of the Year after she nearly doubled her point production from a year ago. Bona ranked third in the nation and second on the team with 61 points (23g-38a) and was named a Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist, All-WCHA Second Team honoree and All-USCHO Third Team honoree for the first time in her career.
The Golden Goldys voting process included spring sports of 2013 (baseball, men's and women's golf, rowing, softball, men's and women's outdoor track & field and men's and women's tennis) and the fall and winter sports of the 2013-14 athletic year.
